ACT Tutoring & Test Prep

Since we started out of a Rice University dorm room in 2003, General Academic has helped thousands of Houston-area students prepare for the ACT college admissions test.

We offer both private one-to-one tutoring and group test prep classes. Private tutoring can occur in your home or at our Rice Village Study Lounge.

Our ACT tutors are among our most talented Peers and Pros:
  • Scored in the top 1% of ACT test-takers
  • Equally skilled in math, English, reading, and science
  • Outgoing and charismatic

Private ACT Tutoring in Home or Office

Private ACT tutoring ensures that your student is only spending precious time on the areas where they need help. Typically, students meet for 1.5 to 3-hours a week.

We will start by identifying your student's strengths and weaknesses by having them take a full-length practice test; we offer these on most Sundays at no-charge.

Then the tutor will work with your student to address shortcomings and reinforce skills in the tested subjects of math, English, science, and reading.

To maximize skill retention, the tutor will assign homework questions for the student to complete in-between sessions; it's optional but strongly recommended.

Take the ACT Early and Often

Students should actively start preparing for the ACT by the second semester of their junior year in high school, which will give them upwards of 6 chances to score their very best.

The ACT is typically offered six times a year; students can take it as often as they want, and almost every college encourages students to take the exam multiple times.

According to ACT's own research, on average, students consistently improve their scores every time they re-tested through the 8th iteration.

ACT Test Taking Strategies

The best predictors of a student's success on the ACT are good grades in school in core academic subjects like math, science, English, and history.

Therefore the best way for a student to prepare is to ensure that they're doing well in core subjects well before their junior year in high school (think middle school).

Next up are standard good test-taking practices:
  1. Determine target score & what it takes to achieve
  2. Know the content and format of the ACT
  3. Identify & tackle weak subject areas
Core academics are king. There are no amount of tips and tricks that will help students ace the ACT if they do not know how to do division or punctuate a sentence.
